A Qualitative Analysis of Healthcare Provider Perspectives on Psychedelic Therapy for Brain Injury Rehabilitation

New research is emerging which considers the role of psychedelic substances in the management of psychiatric disorders and impact on cognitive functioning. A growing area of research within this context considers how psychedelics may be useful in improving outcomes following a brain injury. Specifically, that research tends to be focused on their impact on symptoms of mood disorders such as anxiety and depression as well as cognitive functioning. While some researchers are studying these outcomes in animal and human models, little is understood about how such treatments might be received and implemented by healthcare providers. The interview for this study will focus on understanding what healthcare providers who work with brain injury patients think about this area of research. Topics of interest will include challenges with current rehabilitation approaches, the role of psychedelics, and concerns ethically and legally about such treatments.

The Integration of Gender and Sexual Identity Formation with Recreational Psychedelic Use Among LGBTQIA2S+ Individuals

This dissertation project will examine the lived experiences of LGBTQIA2S+ individuals' recreational consumption of psychedelics and their relationship to sexual and/or gender identity formation. Participants will be asked, following their completion of an initial screening questionnaire, to participate in an interview to obtain data aimed at understanding their lived experiences.

Central Neural Actions of Ibogaine for Opioid Use Disorder

This project will characterize the effects of ibogaine on brain connectivity, neurochemistry, and electrical activity in individuals with Opioid Use Disorder. We will then correlate these measured neural changes with long-term reductions in opioid craving. The ultimate objective is to delineate ibogaine's mechanism of action to provide a scientific foundation for its development as a clinical treatment.
